For all you out there who have played Blaster Master for the Nintendo Entertainment System, I love that game. Blaster Master is a game where you are a little bouncy tank with a big gun. You also get to get out of your tank and go around in an overhead maze mode. Now, not insulting the game because I love a challenge as much as the next guy... but, coming into the second stage, you are greeted by a harmless looking silver slug, it only takes on hit to kill, but... and that's a big BUT... it just happens to be just shorter than your tank, so no matter how hard you try, you just can't shoot the stupid little things.
Ah, the noble history of baddies, if I may use that term. Going way back to Pac Man's Red Ghost and that last alien in Space Invaders, to the bone dogs in Star Tropics, to the invisible guys in Doom, those little pests that just stand out from the rest in anoyingness, none can compare to the slugs of Blaster Master. What twisted mind came up with thes ingeniouse little creatures, (ps If this article is read by the guy who developed them... it would be cool if you told me how you came up with them really), just out of reach, causing damage while hiding out of my range.
Of all the tiny bits of code in the world, the bit that controls those slugs has single handedly been able to push me to wast valuable special weapons, over and over, Heatseakers, ligtning Burst, Missles, anything just to vanquish them from them... but to no avail, the only escape is to flee, because the little pests re-emerge from the NES's cursed spawning pool to torment me again.
Never before, and never since, have I come across such a harmless looking, but life destroyingly pesky, video game bad guy equalling the "Slugs".
I figured out that you can kill them by getting out of your tank... but stay away from ledges!
